13 and a half hour after a problem with a citrix terminalserver (presentation server 4) occured:
for 3 years the server was running without any problems! but today everything was the other way around…
no one was able to run the published application on this server. every attempt to repair the citrix installation went wrong.
so we wanted to uninstall and install citrix on this server. probably not the best idea we had…
hours went by and the server was still not running because after uninstalling the install-process went wrong everytime with the great error message – error 10001.
citrix knowledgebase and a consulter should solve the problem – no way
after all or better let’s say in the meanwhile we decided to install a new server with the wanted application.
this was the best idea we had this day because the other terminalserver is software-technically “dead” and needs to be completely reinstalled.
when i think of the problem now i made the right decision – some years earlier to leave windows behind and change my knowledge to linux.

In the last month Bernhard an I had the change to get a skill update upon Windows Server 2008 and Citrix XenApp 5. At our workplace we use a lot of Windows servers and are we operate a large Terminal server farm since a decade.
In this farm we provide a lot of applications and some of them are running centralized for the whole concern. At the moment we are running a mix of Windows Servers 2000 and Windows Server 2003 all of them with Citrix Metaframe 4.0.
We have also a Citrix Webinterface per country. Currently we provide Webinterfaces in Austria, Poland, Hungary, Switzerland an Dubai (United Arabic Emirates). The German Webinterfaces are managed by German colleagues. All of them are using RSA Secure ID Tokes for two faktor authentication.
Both courses were rely interesting! We plan to migrate to Windows Server 2008 Terminal Server and XenApp 5 in fall this year. XenApp 5 have some nice features but for us only the combination of the 2k8 Server with the new, hopefully better, print spooler system and with the advantages from the new Citrix version, is a good package.
Stay tuned! Maybe we post some information about the migration….
